~~~Under My Protection~~~
River heard Jubel Early long before his ship came to a halt. And when the lean bountyhunter’s silhouette climbed aboard Serenity, she left and took over his vessel. There were so many buttons and levers in the cockpit, things she had never seen, let alone used. But instantly she knew which ones to press, instantly she understood the little ship. Just like she understood Serenity.
It was easy to gain access to Serenity’s communications, and yet, when she gave Kaylee instructions to open the hatches from everybody’s bunk, she hesitated. On board Serenity she always heard and felt everybody else. But from up here, her mind was dark and filled only with her own thoughts. It took concentration to see Jubel’s mind. She failed to find Jayne’s and that relieved her. It meant that he must still be sleeping.
She told Kaylee to leave Jayne’s door locked. He had a good sleep, she knew, and if not wakened, he’d peacefully snore through everything. She was afraid to waken him, afraid of what he might do. Jubel would instantly kill him, if he tried anything and knowing Jayne, he’d try something.
No, this time it was River’s turn to protect.
When Jubel had left and she was back on her ship, back at home, she unlocked Jayne’s hatch. He awoke instantly and was mad at himself for sleeping through the action.
Neither River nor Kaylee told him the truth.
Oh, I like this take on that moment. It really works. Very nicely done and I've enjoyed all the other pieces you've done for this series.
Thank you!! I always wondered how Jayne could actually sleep through all this Early brouhaha and then I started writing this and it simply worked *g*.
As with all of the others, I liked this one a lot. It's simple, and follows cannon... but gives us a slightly different view of "why". I love it! Keep 'em coming while you can, and good luck with your move!
Aw. I wonder if the rest of Firefly fandom is of the opinion that River saved Jayne's ass, or if that's a strictly Rayne shipper belief? Anyway, I totally believe it, and this was a great take on that moment. Well done.
I'm so in love with these little bits!
I've read a lot of stories where River kept him asleep with her brain's super powers, I like this take better. Seems more likely.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed my little drabble--keeping him asleep with her super-powers? Like... supergirl? *g*
Do you write for any fanfic contests or communities? You write better than the norm.
Though this is still damnabley geeky. ;P
thank you!
I post most fics at the repsective communities, but I've never entered a contest. I'll consider the 'damnably geeky' as a compliment *g*
