It had actually been Kaylee who had started this. She had been to the flea-market during her free time on planet 交響樂, which meant ‘Harmony’, but was so lovingly dubbed planet ‘Slime-ball’ by Jayne for obvious reasons. Surprisingly enough she had not only found a photo camera there, to the endless joy of her fellow crewmembers, but the gremlin also turned out to be still working—after a few fixes by the chief mechanic aboard Serenity. So Kaylee had spent six blissful days taking snapshots of the crew and of her favourite parts of the ship, until her homemade, portable ‘photo-lab’ had had an unlucky encounter with a misplaced boot that had Mal’s foot in it and that was that.

The result was that everybody had the enormous luck to see him- or herself on dozens of pictures taped along the corridors of the ship. Printed on the backsides of scraps of posters, manuals and pieces of linen. And on one of those exhibitions on a Cargo Bay wall between a fuzzy shot of Serenity’s engine and Simon’s smiling portrait, was where River found a picture she had already forgotten Kaylee had taken. It was one of the few that showed her, but she then realized that it didn’t show just her. Albeit per chance. She couldn’t actually remember Jayne being there at the moment the picture had been taken; but there he was, as plain as daylight. He must have crossed the room and seen Kaylee wave her camera. Of course all the pictures were far from perfect. The less-than-low quality of the used camera, the second-grade paper and a homemade development area had all added their very own touch to the pictures. Some of them were hardly recognizable. The photograph of River and Jayne was one of the better ones, though the colours were off and the frame was blurry. But that was mainly because of the silken cloth Kaylee had used for the print.

She quickly checked whether anybody was watching and when she found she was alone in the Cargo Bay, she hastily snatched the picture and took it back to her quarters. There, she put it underneath her pillow, inside the sheet so it wouldn’t fall out. The next day she took it out to mark her spots. Then she put it back and forgot about it.
So when a week later Simon told her he was going to change her sheets, she didn’t react in any way.

And the little photo fell unnoticed to the floor, where it undertook quite the voyage. Shepherd Book tread on it, for example, and dragged it a few corridors down with him, before it fell off again. Zoe accidentally kicked it between two rods on the ground. Wash spilled some water over it. Mal stamped down on it, mistaking the flash of brown for a bug.
A few weeks later Jayne dropped a handful of ammunition in the vicinity and noticed the little piece of paper sticking out from between the grates. Curiously he yanked it out from where it stuck, looked at it for a long time, grinned, and then, when he had made sure that he was alone in the corridor, put it in one of his pockets and took it to his room.
By now the photograph looked worn; there were smudges on it, the edges had been torn off and someone, he saw, had apparently painted on it.

He put it between his other treasures in his weapons locker, right underneath Vera. There it would be safe.

Thank you! The next one is number three (remember you asked me, why I didn't send you story number three?), then you'll see why I didn't need beta-ing on that one ^.~

the journey of the photo reminds me of a fairy tale or a children's story. Interesting.
