~~~Chapter 5—Unspoken~~~
The Gathering was held in the town’s hall to support the ‘high society event’ cover on the one hand, and because the town’s mayor was actually the head of a gang widely feared on the planet and was thus able to buy his way into the ‘verses “finest”.
River couldn’t wait to dance, she practically hopped all the way to the village. But when they reached the hall and were allowed to enter, she was so awestruck that she momentarily froze on the spot. It was so very beautiful—there were ribbons and bows hanging on the walls, there was food and drinks piled up on tables, even a band was playing real music and everybody looked so nice and gorgeous. River didn’t think that she had ever seen such a beautiful place, nor such a crowd of well-dressed people. And for a fraction of a moment, she felt utterly out of place. But then Jayne gently nudged her towards a not so crowded corner and the feeling of not-belonging vanished. Still, it was marvellous!
Jayne didn’t know what to do with himself. He was standing in a corner with Simon, Kaylee and River, warily watching the scene. Mal had wandered off into the crowd and had left the mercenary with a ‘babysitting River’ mission. Not that he minded. But it meant no digging in at the buffet, because River wasn’t hungry, and having the food option robbed from him, he was not sure what else there was to do at a party, unless start a good, solid fight and he was forbidden to do that, too.
Simon stared wide-eyed at the people surrounding them, until Kaylee nudged him and he stopped, self-consciously. He said in awe, “This is incredible. You criminals have a pretty good functioning network, haven’t you? It looks like every fraudster in the Universe found his way here—or her way.” He added that last part when a group of attractive women passed them by, whose looks, he was certain of it, could indeed kill.
“What do you mean, ‘you criminals’?” Kaylee asked testily.
“I meant of course ‘us criminals’. This is… incredible.”
“You already said that, doc.” Jayne pointed out.
“Let’s dance!” chirped River. Kaylee beamed at her, “Good idea! C’mon!” And before the doctor could think of stopping them, the girls were swaying to the music and onto the dance floor. The two men watched for a while, Simon uneasily, because he had no idea what to say to Jayne, and Jayne pleased, because two of his best friends were having fun. Then Simon suggested, “Should we, uh, cut in?”
The mercenary grinned and nodded, pushing bodies away to get to the laughing girls. Only when they had reached them, Simon realized thunderstruck that Jayne didn’t offer Kaylee a hand, but instead twirled his sister quite professionally out of the mechanic’s grip and into his arms. But before Simon could stop him, Kaylee had already flung herself at him and was kissing him passionately. After that, everything else seemed not to matter anymore.
River let herself get carried away. The music, everybody’s thoughts and Jayne’s closeness were intoxicating. She held his hands tightly, then closed her eyes and let her body do whatever it felt like. It was all so very, very wonderful! And when she had swirled and hopped and jigged and jumped enough to exhaust herself, she let Jayne’s hand haul her back in.
Then the weariness hit her and her body sagged against his, her head fell against his chest. Her brain became cluttered from the crowd and the prominent feelings of deceit and spitefulness filled her up. It seemed that anybody had hurt everybody at one time or another and each of them was now lurking, waiting for the right moment to stab the others in the back.
She didn’t want to think about that. She wanted to think about Jayne’s arms round her body, his scent in her nostrils, his simple thoughts in her head. She wanted to tell him how much he meant to her and how much she needed him, but when she lifted her head to say all these things, she found him looking at her and his eyes brought her train of thoughts off track.
Then the crowd’s feelings washed over her again and all her own thoughts got lost in the tide.
She yawned, “It’s getting very crowded in my head.” and felt him holding her tighter for a moment.
Then he said, and his voice sounded hoarse and a little odd, but she was too thought-drunk to notice, “We go home soon.”
She nodded, then her head sank back against his chest and she closed her eyes.
